This past week saw the introduction of the Vine App by Twitter, a new social media application that allows users to share 6 second videos of whatever we choose. It spread like wildfire in a matter of hours and I was tempted, oh so tempted to join along. But after a gut check, here are 8 reasons why I’m going to resist, for now anyhow.
1. I suck at time management, and would easily get lost in the app for hours, I’m sure.
2. I am slower than the average bear and take 10 minutes to post 1 Instagram photo; I can only imagine how long it will take me to fiddle with a 6 second video.
3. I recently forgot to pay our water bill, resulting in our water being shut off for 5 hours one day. I don’t need one more thing to distract me from my responsibilities.
4. I at some point would inevitably cross the line and post a video of my husband, or me, or my kids doing something stupid and they’d be mad at me. I sometimes have questionable boundary issues.
5. I hear it’s got porn??? While I can’t attest to the validity of that, I’ll steer clear away until that stuff gets sorted out.
6. I don’t need one more social media app keeping check on my popularity with how many followers I rack up.
7. The world does not need more Andrea. Between the blog, IG, Facebook and Twitter, I put plenty of myself out there.
8. My husband will divorce me if I find one more reason to spend more time on my phone.
These are all my issues people. They are in no way meant to come across as judgement. All of you that have joined, go on with your bad selves and have fun. I just know my limitations, and this is one place I’ve just got to say no, for my own sake and my family’s. But gosh it sure does seem fun! So did you guys join along yet, and how do you like it? I may join one day, I’m not ruling it out, but I think if I were to join, something else would have to go…probably Twitter?
Love every reason you listed!! And I think I agree with them all! I unfortunately, I jumped off the bridge with everyone else and downloaded the app and was quick to post away…Since then I have deleted most of my post, with the exception to a few silly ones. I I did discover that you can make the videos and opt to not have it post to Vine, Twitter, or Facebook, and it then is just saved in your camera roll. I might only keep it for that reason, because it is a neat video option. Thanks for sharing and making some great points!

That’s actually good to know Heidi. I did actually download the app and tried out a couple of videos, and the stop motion feature is kinda neat so it would be fun to just use it for my own personal use…or maybe even just to upload to the blog at some point. Thanks for the tip!
I agree. I actually did join but then realized that’s the last thing I need right now. I can’t think what I could possibly share in 6 seconds that would interest anyone! It’s actually really short! And same as #6 for you, I don’t need another app testing my popularity or whatever. I’d rather be less popular. Maybe I’m just slow on the uptake! But oh well!
I agree, less popular online, more popular in real life 🙂
Came here because Jessi (naptimediaries) retweeted you… I don’t really have an opinion on Vine (I set up an account, but have yet to do anything with it. But I heard the porn thing too and – ew. Probably going to delete)… but I just wanted to tell you I’m totally in love with your blog design. Like, this is literally the cutest blog I’ve ever seen.
Thank you very, very much 🙂 Sorry for the late reply. Just wanted you to know I appreciate your sweet comment!
I, too, downloaded it last weekend but that’s as far as I got before hearing the porno rumors, so it’s just sitting on my phone, taking up space. 😉 I think that all of these social media outlets CAN be good, but that doesn’t mean they’re always beneficial for all. Sortof like that verse in the Bible that says al things are permissible, but not everything is beneficial. Moderation is the key, and I need to learn that as much as everyone else. 🙂
(I have a bad habit of losing time on my phone, too.)
Not for me either.
I agree times eight! Plus it’s a good thing it’s only a 6-sec video. Twenty second videos might be hard to pass up. 😉
What a great post. I’m loving #7 best, actually, and not because I’m opposed to more Andrea in the world, haha. You bring up a really good point. Perhaps we social media buffs should base our decision to join a new venue on whether or not we have something to ADD to it, versus merely considering what we can gain. I really like that. Does the blog world need a little Leslie? Well I guess I think it does. Or at least that God can use me there. Does that mean I need to join every network? Nope.
Andrea I just love you and that you are choosing to say no to this for good reasons. Love all your items! My husband also would kill me for being on my phone any more! Lol glad to hear you won’t just jump on the bandwagon in order to be more popular.
You are adorable, I LOVE your style and I am with you on the whole Vine thing….only because I hate the fact that you can’t control privacy. So happy I found your blog!
